A walk-in tub replaces a standard bathtub with one you step into through a sealed door instead of climbing over a 15-inch wall. For an older homeowner, or anyone with limited mobility, it is often the single change that lets them keep using their own bathroom — and stay in their own house.

The installation itself is the easy part; the part that goes wrong is everything around it. The old tub has to come out without wrecking the tile, the new unit has to sit level and drain correctly, the door seal has to be dead flat, and the wall, floor and trim have to be put back so the room does not look repaired. We do all of that as one job, because we are a remodeling crew rather than a tub-only installer.

Getting the old tub out and the new unit in without damaging the doorway, the floor or the surrounding tile takes planning on a small bathroom.

The unit is set level, connected, sealed and tested. Grab-bar blocking goes in while the wall is open, whether or not you want the bars today.

Rebuild the surround
Tile, wall finish, flooring and trim, so the room reads as a finished bathroom rather than a bathroom with a medical device in it.
